WALES SENIOR MEN - Former Internationals
The WHU
has a very small data base of ex-internationals. With modern communication
systems, we are looking to trawl back through records and photographs
so that an information network can be set up. Memories dim steadily
with age but successes and victories seem increasingly glorious!
As we all came from so far apart geographically, not many personal
friendships will have survived. Supporting the current international
squad at home - and occasionally away - matches and tournaments
will give an opportunity to catch up and share a 'sherbert' or two!!!
Looking back through my
faded photos, I found this one:-

WHERE ARE THEY NOW??
Brian Owen (seated far right) Remember
that quiet, shy, retiring North Walian? He of the remarkably short
fuse, aka 'Harry' or 'O' or indeed both, as in 'Harry O'. Brian
came down to work in Swansea for Abbey National in the late 70s
and we played together at the heart of the Swansea HC defence. Married
to Chris (sadly now separated from each other) and with 3 children
and a granddaughter, Caitlin, Brian's sport is now golf. He can
be seen most days on the course sporting his pink Neston HC socks
when it is shorts weather. A single handicapper and vice captain
of Langland Bay Golf Club, he has retired from the bank and has
a little part time number delivering wine. Old habits die hard!
Cemlyn Foulkes (middle row, second from the left,
between Roger Self (manager) and Jeff Cocks)
was Brian and Chris' best man at their wedding in 1972, a mere 35
years ago. I met Cemlyn several years ago at a junior tournament
in mid Wales as our kids were playing age group hockey for their
clubs. It's great to see so many young players with hockey playing
dads enjoying the sport and doing so well.
My lasting memory of Brian is the goal he scored for Swansea in
Barcelona at the European Clubs Championships to beat the Russian
club champions, Dinamo Alma Alta. While we were only playing for
last or last but one place, Brian roofed one from the back of the
circle to win the game 1-0. Most of us thought it was a goalkeeping
cock-up but the description has been embellished over the years!!!!!!!!!!!!
