2005 European Hockey Championships

Wales v Ireland

Monday 12th September

Wales stern defence holds out  The second day of the Europeans saw Wales face Ireland. A surprise win by Belarus over Russia in the preceding match somewhat changed the expectations of the group. After Irelands 7 - 3 win over Belarus on the first day Irish supporters were hoping for another goal fest. However in the last two meetings Wales and Ireland have shared the spoils and in the first half this again seemed to be the order of the day as the first 35 minutes ended without a goal. However as the whistle went Wales had been awarded a short corner. An Irish foot stopped an inevitable goal from a Paul Edwards hit and Simon Organ was able to convert the resulting flick.

Matt Ruxton gets some close attention  Ireland came out in the second half really pressuring the Welsh goal and the Welsh keeper was made to work hard to keep them in the lead. Wales were not without chances and were unlucky not to extend their lead as number of breakaways enede in the Irish D. However it was an Ireland short corner that resulted in a flick that produced the only goal of the second half as Stephen Butler wrong footed George Harris. Three minutes later Oliver Cooper broke from the Welsh twenty five and was brought to ground when heading for a one on one by Ireland’s Iain Lewers and for this and his subsequent remonstration was yellow carded and sat out the rest of the game.

1 – 1 it finished and for both teams wins tomorrow will see them in the top half of the draw. With Irelands success over Belarus on day 1 would indicate Wales potential but Russia would indicate not to be complacent.
