Celtic Cup 2005

Wales v Scotland

Saturday 23rd July

Wales women struggled to make headway over their Scottish counterparts and went down 4 - 1 with Beth Fisher getting Wales only goal. It was up to the men to restore Welsh pride in their game against Scotland. Presentations were made to two players ahead of the game. For Scotland David Ralph achieved his 100th cap, whilst Wales Paul Edwards (see pic.) achieved a record 123 caps - the most ever achieved by a Welsh player.

The game started as a pretty even affair with both teams producing chances. A misunderstanding by the Welsh defence in the 48th minute allowed Douglas Simpson into the D and as the ball deflecting of the cross bar he slotted it home. The game continued in the same vain until thirteen minutes into the second half when tremendous work down the left wing by Matt Ruxton delivered the ball to Ollie Coopers feet and moments later in the top of the net for his second of the tournament. However Scotland went back into the lead six minutes later when Stephen Dick struck home a superb field goal.

Wales responded immediately and the pressure soon told as a late tackle in the D on Andy Cornick gave Wales a penalty flick. Whitchurch's Laith El Khatib was not to be denied. Wales now knew it was in their hands to win this. And with six minutes remaining Andy Cornick was again fouled in the D and this time awarded a penalty corner. Ollie Cooper was right on target and for the first time Wales were in front. With two minutes remaining Scotland got a short corner but Wales Matthew Simkin was right on form and they were denied an equaliser.

3 – 2 for Wales is a great result and the second time in a week they have beaten a European ‘A’ group side after their win over Belgium last weekend.
